Organic Marketing for Small Business Folks: No Fancy Degree Needed
3/21/20252 min read
Alright, let’s cut to the chase—if you’re running your own small business (or maybe you're a one-person powerhouse), trying to “market” yourself can feel… well, a bit awkward. Maybe even a little like showing up to a potluck empty-handed, and you're standing there wondering...what is marketing anyways?
But here’s the good news:
You don’t need a marketing degree or a big ol’ budget to grow your business.
You just need to be yourself, be consistent, and know how to talk about what you do in a way that makes folks lean in and say, “Tell me more!”
Let’s talk organic marketing—aka the good ol’ fashioned way of growing your business by showing up, serving others, and building trust. No ads. No pressure. Just real connection.
Step 1:
Know What You Do and Who You Help
Sounds simple, but it’s amazing how many folks don’t have this nailed down. (yes, I am seeing your content)
✅ “I help busy parents get dinner on the table without losing their minds.”
✅ “I design websites that don’t look like they were built in 2004.”
✅ “I pour small-batch candles that make your house smell like heaven.”
If you can’t explain it like you’re chatting with someone at the local diner, it’s too complicated.
Step 2:
Pick One or Two Places to Show Up
You don’t have to be everywhere. Pick one or two spots—like Instagram, Facebook, or even good ol’ email—and get consistent.
Post like you’re talking to a neighbor or a cousin you like.
📸 Show what you’re working on.
🎥 Share short videos of your process.
📝 Tell stories.
🙋♀️ Ask questions and reply to comments.
People like doing business with folks they trust—and trust starts with being relatable.
Step 3:
Be Generous With What You Know
Give more than you take. Seriously. Share tips, show your process, answer questions, tell stories. That stuff sticks.
Think of it like this: at the county fair, the booth giving out free samples? Always the busiest. You wanna be that booth.
Give people a reason to follow you before you ever ask them to buy.
Step 4:
Talk About Your Offer (Without Feeling Like a Used Car Salesman, cause ew)
A lot of small biz owners feel weird talking about their products or services. But folks can’t buy what they don’t know about!
Just keep it simple and natural:
👀 “Here’s what I’ve been working on this week!”
🙌 “A customer told me this saved her hours—had to share!”
📦 “Got a fresh batch ready—who wants one?”
You’re not pushing—you’re inviting. You’re proud of what you do. So talk about it!
Step 5:
Keep Showing Up (Even If It’s Just Once a Week)
Organic marketing takes time—but it works. The more you show up, the more people see you, trust you, and start to think, “You know what? I like them. I think I’ll buy from them.”
You don’t have to post daily. Once a week, consistently, with heart and purpose? That’ll do just fine, friend.
You’ve Got This, Seriously, you do!
If my five year old son can do this, you can too! Look—you're already doing the hard part: running the dang business. Marketing doesn’t need to feel like pulling teeth. Just be yourself, be helpful, and don’t be afraid to talk about what you do.
Remember: people don’t buy from perfect—they buy from real. And that’s you!
So go ahead, show up, share your story, and keep doing what you do best. Your people are out there—and they’re rooting for you, just like I am.
But if you still shy away from marketing yourself this way. DM me, and I will be glad to help you out!
